Home in the Fens

My first blog and where do I start? Well to get a feel for this experience and to give you a feel for the Fens I will start with a few images of the local countryside in and around where I live.

This "river" is actually the Twenty Foot drain and one of several cut to drain the Fens initiated by Sir Cornelius Vermuyden in the 15th Century. We also have in the area the Forty Foot and the Sixteen Foot. I understand they get their names from the distance from bank to bank.

Taken early on a frosty morning this photograph emphasises the flatness of the Fens.

Drainage dykes keeping the fields from flooding.

Another shot looking down a Fen road emphasising the wide open spaces.

One of the things that the Fens with its big skies is famous for are sunsets and sunrises and here are a couple of examples:

A Sunrise which also includes another feature of the Fens. Electricity pylons!!

A dramatic sunset!

And finally the most famous landmark in the town of March and it's only real tourist attraction is St. Wendreda's Church:

Here endeth my first BLOG.
